About this event

πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί Sydney A11Y Awareness Day, an insightful evening all about Accessibility, hosted at the Atlassian office in Sydney! πŸ™Œ
Get ready to immerse yourself in a dynamic atmosphere of learning, networking, and fun. πŸŽ‰

We're excited to present three knowledgeable speakers: Sarah Pulis, Co-founder and Director at Intopia; Katherine McDermott, Founder and Director of See Me Please; and Jamal Abdulrahim, Client Engagement Officer also at See Me Please.

Join us as Sarah takes us on a journey "Beyond WCAG: Elevating Your Equitable Design Maturity."
  • There is a constant struggle within organizations to move towards more equitable and inclusive practices. We rarely understand, let alone measure, our equitable design maturity. Let's start to fix that together.
Next, prepare to be inspired by Katherine and Jamal as they share their insights in their captivating presentation, "Without Sight but Plenty of Insight."
  • Digital accessibility is complex and a deeply technical domain. Because of this, many organisations lean on external expertise or mobilise a centre of excellence. These skills are incredibly valuable, but there's also a need to impart knowledge into the hands of all designers and developers who create and enhance digital experiences. When considering digital accessibility, it's crucial to keep the overarching goal in mind. Co-designing and user testing with the very people you're solving for cultivate empathy, uplifts awareness of accessibility considerations across all teams and piques interest in wanting to do better. Hear directly from someone who relies on accessible services as he discusses his experience navigating the digital world without sight.

About our speakers

Sarah Pulis

Sarah Pulis is a passionate advocate for accessible and equitable design, committed to creating a more inclusive digital world. As the co-founder and director of Intopia, she champions the importance of considering diverse user needs, helping organisations with strategic and practical initiatives that lead to more equitable experiences for all.

Katie McDermott

Katie McDermott is the founder of a digital inclusion user- testing platform See Me Please aimed at making online services accessible for all. Prior to trading suits for t-shirts Katie oversaw the digital channel for Service NSW including engineering, design and product management. Katie led globally recognised innovations such as the NSW Digital Drivers Licence, Active Kids Vouchers and the Service NSW App. Katie has studied digital innovation at MIT and also sits on numerous boards including the University of Sydney’s Computer Science Industry Advisory Board, ACT Procurement Board and the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia.

Jamal Abdulrahim

Jamal's love of tech demystifies the preconceived views many people have about disability. Jamal doesn't think accessibility needs to be a scary or heavy conversation. Creating interest in accessibility and the users who rely on accessible services is what's important. Jamal is an engaging and fun speaker who uses humour as a way to humanise the blind experience in the hope of making conversations about inclusion a little less awkward.
